Hikmah or Mathnasium: which is right for your child?

Mathnasium starts with a diagnostic, and so will Hikmah; both speak to Ontario math. Here is where a math-only centre and Hikmah’s broader program differ, with every source listed.

7 min readUpdated November 2026By Hikmah Education

If math is the worry, Mathnasium is probably on your list. It specializes in one subject, from Kindergarten to Grade 12, and has several centres in Ottawa. Hikmah will also start with a diagnostic and a plan, but will teach math, reading and writing together, with thinking and leadership alongside. Here is how they compare, question by question.

Mathnasium’s side comes from its public website and other sources, as of November 2026, listed at the end. Hikmah isn’t open yet, so its side describes what Hikmah will do, not results.

A summary of the sections below. Their side: public sources as of November 2026. Ours: how Hikmah will work.

Who each is for

Mathnasium

Mathnasium calls itself a “math-only learning centre,”1 for Kindergarten to Grade 12.2 It was founded in 2002, with its first centre in Los Angeles,3 and reported “more than 1,300” centres in September 2026.4 In Ottawa, its website lists at least four centres: Barrhaven, Centrepointe, The Glebe and Carlington.6, 7, 8, 9

Hikmah

Hikmah is a learning centre coming soon to Ottawa for children in Grades 1 to 12, in English and French. It will serve families who want strong foundations in math, reading and writing, and the thinking, creating and leading that AI can’t replace, whether their child needs to catch up, keep up or move ahead.14

How each one teaches

Mathnasium

The Mathnasium Method™ “blends personalized learning plans with mental, verbal, visual, tactile, and written techniques.”6 Each child works from a personalized plan built on a diagnostic, and staff “regularly monitor” progress.11

Hikmah

Hikmah’s method will have seven steps. A diagnostic assessment will find where your child is, and a written learning plan will be built around them. The same mentor will guide them, asking more than telling. A missed question will be traced to the skill underneath and fixed there. Short mastery checks, with return visits weeks later, will make skills stick. Projects will put the skills to work for a real audience, and a progress update each month will tell you what changed, why and what’s next.13

Subjects and grades

Mathnasium

Mathnasium teaches math only, from Kindergarten to Grade 12.1, 2 In the United States, Mathnasium Plus offers enrichment for advanced students, from Grade 1 to pre-algebra.4

Hikmah

Hikmah will offer four programs. Elementary (Grades 1 to 6) will build math, reading and writing. Middle years (Grades 7 and 8) will add reasoning and the habits of leading a project. High school (Grades 9 to 12) will cover math and sciences, writing, test preparation and a portfolio. Thinking and leadership (Grades 1 to 12) will teach logic, rhetoric and debate, entrepreneurship and AI literacy, on its own or alongside another program.14

Grades and subjects as each describes them, November 2026.

The first assessment

Mathnasium

Mathnasium starts with a required diagnostic assessment,6 offered free,10 with “both written and verbal components.”11

Hikmah

Every Hikmah program will begin with a diagnostic assessment: short, relaxed tasks in math, reading and writing that show what your child knows, how they learn and where any gap began. It will be free for founding families, and it will lead to a written learning plan you can read.13, 17

What a session looks like

Mathnasium

Mathnasium says it normally recommends “2 to 3 math sessions per week,”2 in the centre or live online through Mathnasium@home,10 and The Glebe centre describes a “small-group environment.”12 The Canadian pages we read don’t say how long a session lasts, so ask your local centre.

Hikmah

A session will start with a short talk with your child’s mentor about school, then one clear goal for the day. Practice will come in short, focused blocks at your child’s pace, and a missed question will send the mentor one skill back. Through the term, sessions will also move a project forward, and at the end of a project your child will share it with an audience. Children who share a gap will be able to work together in a small group. Schedules and hours will be shared with founding families before we open.13, 14

As Mathnasium describes it

  • Usually 2 to 3 sessions a week, recommended2
  • A small-group setting, as The Glebe describes it12
  • Mental, verbal, visual, tactile and written techniques6
  • In the centre, or live online with Mathnasium@home10
  • Session length isn’t stated; ask your local centre

From Mathnasium’s public pages, November 2026. Details vary by centre.

Who teaches

Mathnasium

Mathnasium describes “specially trained tutors,”2 and says “every Mathnasium instructor is trained to deliver our proven curriculum.”10 At The Glebe centre, “all of our instructors are fluent in both English and French.”8

Hikmah

Hikmah’s mentors aren’t hired yet. Each will be chosen against a published standard: depth in their subjects, experience with young people, finding the root of a mistake and asking before telling, patience and reliability, and fluent English or French. Every candidate will pass six steps, including a teaching demonstration, a subject check, references and a police vulnerable sector check, then training and shadowing. Certification with the Ontario College of Teachers will be valued, and your child will keep the same mentor wherever we can.15

How parents hear about progress

Mathnasium

Mathnasium staff “regularly monitor” each child and provide “detailed reports”; the page we read doesn’t say how often.11 Its myMathnasium portal, with session summaries and progress reports, is “now available in the United States”; we couldn’t confirm it in Canada in November 2026.4

Hikmah

Once a month, your child’s mentor will send you a progress update in plain words: the skills mastered, what comes next and one thing to try at home. You’ll be able to reply to the mentor or book a conversation, and you’ll meet the mentor before the first session.14, 15

Technology and AI

Mathnasium

In January 2026, Mathnasium listed AI learning plans and a new parent portal as planned.5 We couldn’t confirm in November 2026 whether the AI learning plans have launched, so ask your local centre.

Hikmah

The Hikmah platform, in development, will keep a mastery map of every skill and the skills beneath it, and prepare short practice matched to the next skill. Mentors will decide: they will review every plan and will be able to override any suggestion. The tools will give hints and questions, not answers, and generated questions will be checked against the curriculum before your child sees them.16

Thinking, creating, leading and using AI well

Mathnasium

Mathnasium’s focus is math. On its website in November 2026, we found no separate program for thinking or leadership; its Mathnasium Plus enrichment is offered in the United States.4

Hikmah

Hikmah will teach six capacities that stay human as AI takes on routine work: thinking critically, creating, solving problems, deciding, communicating and leading. They’ll be taught through Socratic questions, logic, rhetoric and ethics, practised in projects for a real audience, and built on strong math, reading and writing. Children will learn to use AI as a tool once they can do the thinking themselves.13, 14

The Ontario curriculum

Mathnasium

Mathnasium’s Ottawa page says “instruction can be aligned with the Ontario Mathematics Curriculum,” and it prepares students for the EQAO tests in Grades 3, 6 and 9.2 The Barrhaven centre says it “doesn’t follow a fixed curriculum.”6

Hikmah

Hikmah’s learning plans and mastery map will be built around the Ontario curriculum expectations for each grade and subject, so work at Hikmah will line up with what your child is taught and assessed on at school.16

Cost and commitment

Mathnasium

Its Ottawa centres describe a flat monthly membership; The Glebe adds a one-time enrolment fee, and Centrepointe says there are no long-term contracts.7, 8 On its website in November 2026, we found no prices for its Ottawa centres, so ask your local centre.

Hikmah

Hikmah’s tuition isn’t set yet. We’ll publish tuition before we open, along with schedules and hours. Founding families will get a free diagnostic assessment, first access to spots and a founding tuition rate, with its terms published before we open.14, 17

Which is right for your child?

Mathnasium may suit your child if

  • your child needs help in math only
  • you want preparation for the EQAO tests in Grade 3, 6 or 9
  • you want a centre open in Ottawa now, with several locations
  • you’d like a monthly membership; Centrepointe says there are no long-term contracts
  • you’d like math in French: The Glebe says all its instructors are fluent in both languages

Hikmah may suit your child if

  • you want one mentor who knows your child, asks before telling and adjusts the plan
  • you want math, reading and writing in one plan, with thinking and leadership alongside
  • you’d like a written progress update every month, in plain words
  • you want your child to make real things for a real audience
  • you can wait for our first centre to open, as a founding family

Whichever you choose, start with the first assessment and read the plan that follows it. A good fit should explain your child to you in plain words, and tell you what comes next.
