Hikmah or Huntington: which is right for your child?

Huntington offers a long first evaluation, a dedicated tutor and regular parent conferences, in the United States. Here is how it compares with Hikmah for an Ottawa family.

7 min readUpdated November 2026By Hikmah Education

Huntington Learning Center has worked with families since 1977, and its model is clear: a thorough evaluation, a dedicated tutor and regular conferences with parents. For an Ottawa family, the first question is access, because we found no Huntington centres in Canada. Hikmah will also start with a diagnostic and a plan, with one mentor, a monthly progress update and a thinking and leadership program. Here is how they compare, question by question.

Huntington’s side comes from its public website and other sources, as of November 2026, listed at the end. Hikmah isn’t open yet, so its side describes what Hikmah will do, not results.

A summary of the sections below. Their side: public sources as of November 2026. Ours: how Hikmah will work.

Who each is for

Huntington

Huntington Learning Center was founded in 1977 by Eileen and Dr. Raymond Huntington, with its first centre in River Edge, New Jersey,1 and serves “kindergarten through grade 12, plus adults.”7 Its FAQ says it has about 300 centres across the country, and its About page describes its locations as being in the U.S.1, 7 On its website in November 2026, we found no Huntington centres in Canada; its locator loaded only partly, so check with Huntington.3

Hikmah

Hikmah is a learning centre coming soon to Ottawa for children in Grades 1 to 12, in English and French. It will serve families who want strong foundations in math, reading and writing, and the thinking, creating and leading that AI can’t replace, whether their child needs to catch up, keep up or move ahead.10

How each one teaches

Huntington

Huntington starts with a long Academic Evaluation, then a consultation with parents and a personalized plan. Each family is introduced to “your child’s dedicated, certified tutor.”4

Hikmah

Hikmah’s method will have seven steps. A diagnostic assessment will find where your child is, and a written learning plan will be built around them. The same mentor will guide them, asking more than telling. A missed question will be traced to the skill underneath and fixed there. Short mastery checks, with return visits weeks later, will make skills stick. Projects will put the skills to work for a real audience, and a progress update each month will tell you what changed, why and what’s next.9

Subjects and grades

Huntington

Huntington covers math, reading, writing and science, plus study skills, ADHD tutoring and test prep (SAT, ACT, ISEE, SSAT and others),5 for Kindergarten to Grade 12, plus adults.7

Hikmah

Hikmah will offer four programs. Elementary (Grades 1 to 6) will build math, reading and writing. Middle years (Grades 7 and 8) will add reasoning and the habits of leading a project. High school (Grades 9 to 12) will cover math and sciences, writing, test preparation and a portfolio. Thinking and leadership (Grades 1 to 12) will teach logic, rhetoric and debate, entrepreneurship and AI literacy, on its own or alongside another program.10

Grades and subjects as each describes them, November 2026.

The first assessment

Huntington

The Academic Evaluation includes “grade-appropriate assessments in core subjects” and a “cognitive skills evaluation,” and “typically takes between 2 1/2 to 3 hours.” A consultation with parents follows, then a personalized plan.4

Hikmah

Every Hikmah program will begin with a diagnostic assessment: short, relaxed tasks in math, reading and writing that show what your child knows, how they learn and where any gap began. It will be free for founding families, and it will lead to a written learning plan you can read.9, 13

What a session looks like

Huntington

Huntington typically recommends “at least twice a week,” or three or more times a week in summer.7 Huntington describes individualized tutoring from a personalized plan, in the centre, online or both, and its online tutoring is one to one.4, 6 Its pages don’t give a group size for sessions at the centre.

Hikmah

A session will start with a short talk with your child’s mentor about school, then one clear goal for the day. Practice will come in short, focused blocks at your child’s pace, and a missed question will send the mentor one skill back. Through the term, sessions will also move a project forward, and at the end of a project your child will share it with an audience. Children who share a gap will be able to work together in a small group. Schedules and hours will be shared with founding families before we open.9, 10

Who teaches

Huntington

In Huntington’s words, “our tutors have degrees from four-year colleges, plus either state or Huntington certification,”7 and each family meets “your child’s dedicated, certified tutor.”4

Hikmah

Hikmah’s mentors aren’t hired yet. Each will be chosen against a published standard: depth in their subjects, experience with young people, finding the root of a mistake and asking before telling, patience and reliability, and fluent English or French. Every candidate will pass six steps, including a teaching demonstration, a subject check, references and a police vulnerable sector check, then training and shadowing. Certification with the Ontario College of Teachers will be valued, and your child will keep the same mentor wherever we can.11

How parents hear about progress

Huntington

Huntington describes “regular parent conferences to discuss progress”4 and an “ongoing feedback system and progress reports.”2 With your permission, it talks with your child’s school teachers about their progress.7

Hikmah

Once a month, your child’s mentor will send you a progress update in plain words: the skills mastered, what comes next and one thing to try at home. You’ll be able to reply to the mentor or book a conversation, and you’ll meet the mentor before the first session.10, 11

Technology and AI

Huntington

In January 2025, Huntington announced curricula enhanced with AI that it says “aligns with state standards,” vetted by certified teachers, along with a “Virtual Tutor.”8

Hikmah

The Hikmah platform, in development, will keep a mastery map of every skill and the skills beneath it, and prepare short practice matched to the next skill. Mentors will decide: they will review every plan and will be able to override any suggestion. The tools will give hints and questions, not answers, and generated questions will be checked against the curriculum before your child sees them.12

Thinking, creating, leading and using AI well

Huntington

Huntington offers study skills alongside its subjects.5 On its website in November 2026, we found no separate program for thinking or leadership.

Hikmah

Hikmah will teach six capacities that stay human as AI takes on routine work: thinking critically, creating, solving problems, deciding, communicating and leading. They’ll be taught through Socratic questions, logic, rhetoric and ethics, practised in projects for a real audience, and built on strong math, reading and writing. Children will learn to use AI as a tool once they can do the thinking themselves.9, 10

The Ontario curriculum

Huntington

Huntington says the AI-enhanced curricula it announced in January 2025 align with state standards (in the U.S.).8 On its website in November 2026, we found no claim of alignment with the Ontario curriculum.

Hikmah

Hikmah’s learning plans and mastery map will be built around the Ontario curriculum expectations for each grade and subject, so work at Hikmah will line up with what your child is taught and assessed on at school.12

Cost and commitment

Huntington

Huntington advertises “competitive hourly rates” and no contract, so families can stop at any time.7 “Typically, pricing is determined after the evaluation.”4 On its website in November 2026, we found no prices.

Hikmah

Hikmah’s tuition isn’t set yet. We’ll publish tuition before we open, along with schedules and hours. Founding families will get a free diagnostic assessment, first access to spots and a founding tuition rate, with its terms published before we open.10, 13

  • you want individualized tutoring with a dedicated tutor
  • your child is preparing for a U.S. test such as the SAT, ACT, ISEE or SSAT
  • you’d like regular parent conferences, with no contract

Hikmah may suit your child if

  • you want one mentor who knows your child, asks before telling and adjusts the plan
  • you want math, reading and writing in one plan, with thinking and leadership alongside
  • you’d like a written progress update every month, in plain words
  • you want your child to make real things for a real audience

What parents ask.

Is there a Huntington centre in Ottawa?

On Huntington’s website in November 2026, we found no centres in Canada. Its online tutoring page doesn’t say whether it serves families in Canada, so ask Huntington directly.

Is Hikmah connected to Huntington?

No. Hikmah Education is an independent learning centre coming soon to Ottawa. It isn’t affiliated with Huntington Learning Center.

Will my child have one mentor at Hikmah?
