Hikmah or Kumon: which is right for your child?

A daily worksheet habit, or a mentor and a plan that add thinking and leading? A fair, sourced look at how Kumon and Hikmah teach, report and cost.

8 min readUpdated November 2026By Hikmah Education

Kumon and Hikmah both want your child to master the basics before moving on. They go about it very differently: Kumon builds a daily habit of independent practice in math and reading, and Hikmah will pair your child with a mentor and a written learning plan that adds writing, thinking and leading. Here is how they compare, question by question, so you can choose what fits your child.

Kumon’s side comes from its public website and other sources, as of November 2026, listed at the end. Hikmah isn’t open yet, so its side describes what Hikmah will do, not results.

A summary of the sections below. Their side: public sources as of November 2026. Ours: how Hikmah will work.

Who each is for

Kumon

Kumon teaches math and reading, from preschool to secondary school, and describes itself as “the world’s largest after-school math and reading program.”2, 6 It began in 1954, when Toru Kumon, a high school math teacher in Japan, wrote math problems for his son; the first centre opened in Osaka in 1955.3 Kumon has several centres across Ottawa; we link three (Barrhaven, Vanier, Stittsville).4, 5, 6 Kumon’s centre locator lists them all.

Hikmah

Hikmah is a learning centre coming soon to Ottawa for children in Grades 1 to 12, in English and French. It will serve families who want strong foundations in math, reading and writing, and the thinking, creating and leading that AI can’t replace, whether their child needs to catch up, keep up or move ahead.17

How each one teaches

Kumon

Kumon describes “individualized instruction to help each child develop his or her ability to the maximum,” using “small-step worksheets.”1 Children “correct their mistakes until they achieve 100%” and build “self-learning skills, learning primarily on their own.”2 The practice is daily, so the habit is part of the method.2

Hikmah

Hikmah’s method will have seven steps. A diagnostic assessment will find where your child is, and a written learning plan will be built around them. The same mentor will guide them, asking more than telling. A missed question will be traced to the skill underneath and fixed there. Short mastery checks, with return visits weeks later, will make skills stick. Projects will put the skills to work for a real audience, and a progress update each month will tell you what changed, why and what’s next.16

Subjects and grades

Kumon

Kumon offers two subjects, math and reading, from preschool to secondary school.6, 7 Its math levels end with calculus, and its highest reading levels focus on critical reading.8

Hikmah

Hikmah will offer four programs. Elementary (Grades 1 to 6) will build math, reading and writing. Middle years (Grades 7 and 8) will add reasoning and the habits of leading a project. High school (Grades 9 to 12) will cover math and sciences, writing, test preparation and a portfolio. Thinking and leadership (Grades 1 to 12) will teach logic, rhetoric and debate, entrepreneurship and AI literacy, on its own or alongside another program.17

The first assessment

Kumon

Kumon starts with a free placement test, which the Instructor goes over with the parent.4

Hikmah

Every Hikmah program will begin with a diagnostic assessment: short, relaxed tasks in math, reading and writing that show what your child knows, how they learn and where any gap began. It will be free for founding families, and it will lead to a written learning plan you can read.16, 20

What a session looks like

Kumon

Kumon says “students typically visit their Centre twice a week,” with “15 to 30 minutes of work a day,”2 and they do worksheets at home on the other five days.6 Kumon also describes virtual classes.9

Hikmah

A session will start with a short talk with your child’s mentor about school, then one clear goal for the day. Practice will come in short, focused blocks at your child’s pace, and a missed question will send the mentor one skill back. Through the term, sessions will also move a project forward, and at the end of a project your child will share it with an audience. Children who share a gap will be able to work together in a small group. Schedules and hours will be shared with founding families before we open.16, 17

As Kumon describes it

  • Twice a week at the centre2
  • 15 to 30 minutes of work a day2
  • Worksheets at home on the other five days6
  • Mistakes corrected until the work reaches 100%2
  • Virtual classes also described9

Who teaches

Kumon

In Kumon’s words, “Kumon Instructors are there to lesson plan, evaluate, and guide your child.”2 In Canada, centre owners complete a math, reading and writing proficiency assessment, two four-day training sessions and a background check with a vulnerable sector search.15

Hikmah

Hikmah’s mentors aren’t hired yet. Each will be chosen against a published standard: depth in their subjects, experience with young people, finding the root of a mistake and asking before telling, patience and reliability, and fluent English or French. Every candidate will pass six steps, including a teaching demonstration, a subject check, references and a police vulnerable sector check, then training and shadowing. Certification with the Ontario College of Teachers will be valued, and your child will keep the same mentor wherever we can.18

How parents hear about progress

Kumon

The myKumon Portal shows monthly progress trends for the last six months,10 and through Kumon Connect parents can see their child’s progress history.11 At the parent orientation, the Instructor shows a progress chart for the first six months.9 Kumon doesn’t publish a brand-wide schedule for parent conferences; some centres set their own. Ask your local centre.

Hikmah

Once a month, your child’s mentor will send you a progress update in plain words: the skills mastered, what comes next and one thing to try at home. You’ll be able to reply to the mentor or book a conversation, and you’ll meet the mentor before the first session.17, 18

Technology and AI

Kumon

Kumon Connect puts the worksheets on a tablet. Families supply their own tablet and stylus, and Instructors can replay a child’s work and add comments; not every centre offers it yet.11 It rolled out across the U.S. and Canada on March 1, 2024.12 On its website in November 2026, we found no claims about AI.

Hikmah

The Hikmah platform, in development, will keep a mastery map of every skill and the skills beneath it, and prepare short practice matched to the next skill. Mentors will decide: they will review every plan and will be able to override any suggestion. The tools will give hints and questions, not answers, and generated questions will be checked against the curriculum before your child sees them.19

Thinking, creating, leading and using AI well

Kumon

A Canadian fact sheet from 2016–17 lists critical thinking and problem-solving among Kumon’s aims,13 and its highest reading levels focus on critical reading.8 On its website in November 2026, we found no separate program for thinking or leadership.

Hikmah

Hikmah will teach six capacities that stay human as AI takes on routine work: thinking critically, creating, solving problems, deciding, communicating and leading. They’ll be taught through Socratic questions, logic, rhetoric and ethics, practised in projects for a real audience, and built on strong math, reading and writing. Children will learn to use AI as a tool once they can do the thinking themselves.16, 17

The Ontario curriculum

Kumon

Kumon follows its own sequence of levels, and “many children end up studying far beyond their school grade level.”14 On its website in November 2026, we found no claim that it aligns with the Ontario curriculum.

Hikmah

Hikmah’s learning plans and mastery map will be built around the Ontario curriculum expectations for each grade and subject, so work at Hikmah will line up with what your child is taught and assessed on at school.19

Cost and commitment

Kumon

Kumon charges by the month, per subject. As of November 2026, the Barrhaven centre listed tuition of $180 per subject per month, an $80 enrolment fee per student and a $30 materials fee.4 The other Ottawa centre pages we read (Vanier and Stittsville) don’t post prices, and Vanier notes that additional fees may apply.5, 6 Ask your local centre.

Hikmah

Hikmah’s tuition isn’t set yet. We’ll publish tuition before we open, along with schedules and hours. Founding families will get a free diagnostic assessment, first access to spots and a founding tuition rate, with its terms published before we open.17, 20

Which is right for your child?

Kumon may suit your child if

  • you want a short daily practice habit in math or reading
  • your child enjoys working independently, at their own pace
  • you want to start as early as preschool
  • you want a centre that is open in Ottawa today
  • you like a simple monthly price per subject

Hikmah may suit your child if

  • you want one mentor who knows your child, asks before telling and adjusts the plan
  • you want math, reading and writing in one plan, with thinking and leadership alongside
  • you’d like a written progress update every month, in plain words
  • you want your child to make real things for a real audience
  • you can wait for our first centre to open, as a founding family

Whichever you choose, start with the first assessment and read the plan that follows it. A good fit should explain your child to you in plain words, and tell you what comes next.
