In a small paper library on an island, a mother reads a slim guide in an armchair under a warm lamp while her son stands on a step stool to take a book from the shelf.

The House of Wisdom, and why we took its name

What the House of Wisdom was

In ninth-century Baghdad, scholars gathered to translate, learn, test and teach. Works of mathematics, medicine, astronomy and philosophy were translated, studied and extended. It became a symbol of what a community of learning can do.

Why it still matters

Its scholars didn’t just collect knowledge. They checked it, argued about it, improved it and passed it on. That’s still a good description of what education should do.

Learn, test and teach.

The short version

Why we took its name

Hikmah means wisdom. We chose the name because we want each child to learn that way: curious, careful, open to ideas from everywhere and willing to test them. A name like that is a heritage, and a standard to live up to.
