What the House of Wisdom can teach a modern classroom

Over a thousand years ago, scholars in Baghdad learned, tested and taught together. Their habits still make a good classroom.

A place for learning together

The House of Wisdom in Baghdad brought scholars together to translate, study, test ideas and teach. Knowledge from many languages and traditions was gathered, questioned and built on, rather than simply stored.

Habits worth borrowing

Learning from many sources. Testing ideas rather than accepting them. Writing things down so others can check and improve them. Teaching what you’ve learned. Each of these maps onto something a child can practise today, at any age.

Gather widely, then test what you find.

The short version

What it looks like at Hikmah

Children read widely, check claims, explain their reasoning to each other and present real work for feedback. Mentors show their own curiosity, and say “let’s test that” far more often than “because I said so”.
