What marks miss
Marks show performance on tests and assignments. They don’t show whether your teen can plan a project, work with others, take feedback or make something useful. Those are often the things that matter most once school ends.
What goes in a portfolio
A small number of strong pieces: a research project, a piece of writing they’re proud of, a presentation, something they built or organized. Each comes with a short reflection on what they did, what was hard and what they learned.
Marks show results; a portfolio shows ability.
How to build one
Start early and keep it simple. Save work as it’s made. Revisit it each term, choosing the best and noting what changed. By the final years, your teen will have real evidence of growth, and a clearer sense of what they enjoy.
